Pics and Flicks is about to finalise another wonderful year.
In  2012 eleven varied and entertaining films from Denmark, France, Iran and Australia were screened to appreciative audiences averaging over 100 people  each night.
Pics and Flicks has also supported local community groups this year  by helping with the screening of documentaries on two important social issues  – bullying  and coal seam gas extraction.
Now, as an exciting finish to the  year, Pics and Flicks is screening ‘Beasts of the Southern Wilds’ which  is a great film festival favourite around the world since its release in September 2012. This drama will take you on a magical trip to southern  USA.
Screening: Friday, 7th December starting 8pm Venue: Gerringong Town Hall Tickets: at the door

Movie Info

In a forgotten but defiant bayou community cut off from the rest of  the world by a sprawling levee, a six-year-old girl exists on the brink  of orphanhood. Buoyed by her childish optimism and extraordinary  imagination, she believes that the natural world is in balance with the  universe until a fierce storm changes her reality. Desperate to repair  the structure of her world in order to save her ailing father and  sinking home, this tiny hero must learn to survive unstoppable  catastrophes of epic proportions. — (C) Fox Searchlight

Working with a cast of well-chosen non-actors, first-time director Benh Zeitlin accomplishes a remarkable debut—energetically staged, alternately lyrical and surreal, and fueled equally by  righteous anger over the destruction of the Gulf Coast and by an  awestruck wonder at the tenacity of the region’s peoples. Beasts is catastrophe as fairytale: a flood is coming to “the Bathtub” (read:  the low-lying wards of New Orleans), a poor but rowdy world of makeshift housing, raunchy revelers and pagan energy, perched precariously on the wrong side of a Gulf Coast levy. Most of the residents are packing up  to leave, but not African-American patriarch Wink (Dwight Henry), and  not his 6-year-old daughter Hushpuppy (Quvenzhané Wallis). — (C) Box Office Magazine

Hi everyoneI’m sending you this because you’re an art maker, teacher or consumer, or perhaps work for a service that provides art-based workshops, or some mixture of all of the above!Next week I’m meeting with Marcus Westbury and Roberta Styles-Wood from Renew Australia. I’ve spoken to some of you about this project but if I haven’t – basically they and Stocklands are offering a large empty office space in Nowra for use as studio/gallery/workshop/teaching space. ( – you may have heard about the fantastic things they initially did with the many vacant shopfronts in Newcastle a few years ago)If you would be interested in using the space in some way (don’t worry – you’re not committing to anything!! This is just to get an idea of what COULD happen in the space) – either as studio or occasional workshop/teaching space or as gallery space or even as one-off market space or pop-up shop, or who knows what…. please let me know. The more interest that is registered the more likely the idea will have enough energy to run. Please hand the information on to others you think might be interested and get them to email me back with their areas of interest, so I can show Marcus and Roberta and the Stocklands people that there’s the possibility for wonderful things! Thanks, jen

As part of the Telling Truths: Crime Fiction and National Allegory Conference, a panel of Australia’s leading crime writers talk about place and its significance in their work. Can a city or a place be a character in a book? Do the seedy streets of Melbourne, the flashy sand and sun of the Gold Coast, the sparkling Sydney Harbour hiding many a misdeed, dictate where crime writers set their stories? And why has no one, except the Godfather of Crime, Peter Corris, written a crime fiction novel set in Wollongong? Come and hear some of Australia’s leading crime fiction authors dishing dirt about crime, place and fiction. For all conference information click here.

The Prophet will feature voices and oud in music composed by Joseph Tawadros and influenced by both Eastern and Western traditions. Our tribute to John Dowland features the lute, that most intimate of instruments, bringing together the greatest living lutenist of our times, Nigel North, and performing John Downland’s exquisite and moving music written for the lute. The Season concludes with a return to the extensive repertoire of Christmas music featuring a selection of angelic music from Germany, Italy and France and, of course from Australia. Of Birds and Angels will include Isaac’s Christmas Motets, Monteverdi’s Sacred Psalms and Edward’s Kingfisher Psalms.

Since forming in 2009, Wollongong’s very own dub/reggae juggernaut has developed a distinctive sound, infamous for its sweaty dance pits and big time party starting. Quickly becoming a highly sought after act, the band also infiltrated the eminent Australian festival scene, elating crowds at Rainbow Serpent, Playground Weekender, Foreshore Festival, Bondi LoveJam, Viva la Gong, Subsonic, R.E.G.E.N, Peats Ridge and Wollombi Music Fest. From the bottom of hearts we’d like to thank all you that have supported us and most of all come to shows to get down. You’ve made some of the best times of our young lives and we’re spoiled to have met so many people we can now call friends. We feel extremely lucky that by playing music we like, we could bring together a room of people to get down as one, despite any differences that so often divide us.

The 28th Illawarra Folk Festival (17-20 January 2013) is coming up quickly… only 7 weeks away… so we are asking musicians to get in training to join in the wonderful traditional music sessions at the festival.

Sessions are a traditional form of socialising with the joy of music. Playing music in a social convivial and relaxed acoustic atmosphere is very soothing for the musical soul.

Many festivals have tune sessions but at times it is difficult to join in unless you know the tunes.

I have negotiated to have acoustic sessions in the Dining Room at the Dicey Rileys Pub, 333 Crown Street (near the train station).

SUNDAY 2 December, 2-4PM

SUNDAY 6 January 2013, 2-4PM

We’ll be playing tunes from Australia, Ireland, Scotland, England, French Canada and even Italy! If we can a get a singer we can also do some traditional folk songs.

Music is supplied and acoustic musicians are welcome. The general public are more than welcome as well and enjoy traditional music with a refreshment! Children are also welcome.

December Update from Penny and the Mystics

Hi everyone,

Lots happening with the band at the moment. Our lead guitarists Sam Hathaway has decided to take a different path with his music and we wish him all the best with that. We’ve been working with a few very talented friends who are adding different dimensions to our performances.

We’ve got some very exciting news too. We’ve received $15,000 under the Federal Government’s Contemporary Music Touring Grant for our tour of WA in February and March.

Tour planning is underway (thanks to Michael Bradmore) and he’s lined up some great gigs– starting with the Rockcliffe Winery in Denmark on February 24. We’ll be going to lots of places in the south-west, in the arc from Perth to Albany – including Margaret River, Yallingup and Bunbury.

In the meantime, here are our upcoming gigs closer to home:

Friday, 7 December: The Heritage Hotel, Bulli (with our friends Southerly Change and King Dog & The Cats). Doors open 7pm – show starts at 8pm. Tickets $12 presale and $15 at the door.

Sunday, 9 December: Coalcliff Surf Club 1-5pm. We’ll be joined by the lovely Bec Sandridge who will kick off the afternoon.

Sunday, 16 December: Greenwell Point Hotel. The afternoon will kick off with Daddy Long legs and the Swamp Donkeys at 3.30pm. We’ll be playing from 5-7pm.

Friday, 21 December: The Brass Monkey at Cronulla supporting Sydney’s reggae royalty, the awesome King Tide. Tickets and info at

I’ve got a solo acoustic spot at the Blue Diamond at the Sebel Harbourside in Kiama on Sunday 23 December from 1-4pm, and at the Wharf Road Restaurant on the river bank at Nowra on Sunday 6 January from 3-6pm.

We’re also playing a few acoustic sets at the Illawarra Folk Festival – 17-20 January at Bulli Showground. All the details of this fabulous festival at

Hope to see you at one of our shows.

Have a great Christmas, and thanks for all your support during the year.
